Q Tell us about your history and capabilities as the UK’s leading tools, equipment and plant hire services company.
“Speedy was founded by John Brown in Wigan, the North-West town, back in 1977. Brown formed Livesy Hire, and in 1982, went on to purchase Speedy Fixings Power Tools Ltd. In 1987, the first Speedy depot opened in London, and after a series of acquisitions, Speedy eventually bought Hewden’s Tool Hire assets.
“Employing around 3,200 staff, ., boasting an unrivalled range of tools, plant and specialist equipment. Over 2,800 products are included in our hire range, while we also provide specialist solutions that support our customers to complete their projects in the most effective, efficient and safe way.
“With nationwide availability and expert support, Speedy is geared up to make your life easier. Aside from our hire range, we offer thousands of industry-leading products for purchase, including tools, equipment, PPE and site consumables.
“Complementary services are available to Speedy customers, which fit around a core hire and specialist solutions function. These services include on-site operative training, test and repair, fuel supply and management, industrial shutdown project management, on-site depots and dedicated hire desks that ensure the right equipment arrives in the right place, at the right time.
“Speedy’s complementary services enable our clients to operate more efficiently, ensuring compliance and risk reduction. In turn, our clients are able to offer the best possible services to their customers.
“In addition, at a time when the industry is under constant pressure from both legislative and industry demands to improve environmental performance, Speedy recognises that we have a duty to support our customers through our Intelligent Environment initiative.
“Specific products such as our Green Option (GO) range of tools and equipment deliver the greenest resources including lighting, heating, solar and various other environmentally friendly solutions. These products are carefully selected, not just to be “fit for purpose”, but to deliver excellence in both health and safety and long term sustainability / environmental performance.”
Q This year, Speedy is celebrating its 40th anniversary – congratulations on this milestone! What is the key to your longevity?
“Speedy’s huge range of tools, equipment, power and other hire essentials are the widest choice in the industry. However, every so often, customers come to us for help with something outside of our core range. This is where our Partnered Services come into play.
“Through Partnered Services, we offer an extensive range of specialist products that aren’t already held within our fleet. This provision is unique to the sector and means that customers can come directly to us for absolutely all of their hire needs. Whatever you need, Speedy can deliver.
“In addition, Speedy has achieved a very impressive geographical growth in its provision of services across England, Ireland, Europe, Kazakhstan and the Middle East, driven by its National and Commercial sales teams. This growth has been facilitated through a natural evolution in services; we provide power solutions and compressor solutions to the Petrochemical Industry. In addition, we offer solutions in the Nuclear, Offshore and Construction sectors.
“Our diverse business proposition has certainly attracted many companies towards our services and is a key feature that separates Speedy from the field. Latterly, acquisitions such as Lloyds British Testing Ltd – a historic, specialist business which carries out training, testing, certification, and inspection of lifting equipment – have given Speedy an even more dynamic edge.
“Speedy can supply lifting equipment and check if said equipment conforms to strict safety checks. Lloyds British Testing services also extend to our customers’ own lifting equipment; both complementing and enhancing our overall offering.”
Q Can you tell us more about your ‘Intelligent Safety’ campaign?
“Keeping our people and customers safe is at the heart of our business. Intelligent Safety is a new and enhanced programme at Speedy – a journey to competence that focuses on skills, knowledge and behaviour.
Speedy Intelligent Safety topics include:
- Hand Arm Vibration (HAVS)
- Working at Height
- Confined Space and ATEX
- Manual Handling
- Slips, Trips and Falls
“Speedy Intelligent Safety is threefold:
- It’s our internal behavioural safety brand that drives a culture of adopting the safest activities.
- It’s our external facing brand, helping customers make informed decisions – i.e. not just hiring a drill, but hiring a solution to the risks that may arise from using that drill (in dusty conditions, for example).
- It’s about reducing risks for both Speedy and our customers.
“Speedy Intelligent Safety has a dedicated website featuring products, videos, training, and health and safety support. Each safety topic contains information, facts, products and solutions to help manage risks, plus training courses designed to improve competence.
“I believe that if you have an environment where people want to learn, you are always going to improve.”
Speedy Intelligent Safety Rules:
- We report ALL accidents, incidents and near misses to our line manager.
- We DO NOT operate plant or equipment unless trained.
- We DO NOT use mobile phones whilst driving operating plant or operating equipment.

- We look after each other and our customers.
- If something is unsafe when working, we STOP and ask.
Q Congratulations on your success as double Gold Award winners at the RoSPA Health & Safety Awards 2017! What does this achievement mean to you and Speedy Services?
“For the third year running, Speedy secured the top-level accreditation at the RoSPA Health and Safety Awards!
“These accreditations are important to our business as they send a message that we are serious about occupational safety. They also demonstrate that we not only match our words with actions, but also take our responsibilities seriously.
“My team and I work tirelessly to help the business reach its safety goals. To reach this level of excellence, a company needs to achieve a consistent reduction in accident rates year on year.
“It’s certainly good to get together around the table for successes such as these; to celebrate our exemplary safety record. It also gratifying to be recognised in this way, but we remember that we will only maintain our safety culture through ongoing innovation and maintaining our focus on operational safety and people’s health.”
Q What is your approach to occupational health and well-being?
“Speedy has its own employee self-help scheme that covers mental health, family matters, financial issues, stress, and a range of other health and personal topics which may arise during employment.
“Speedy also supports bigger agendas such as ‘Mates in Mind’ – a construction industry initiative supporting mental health concerns in construction trades.
“Alongside this, we conduct employee health checks, as you would expect, where employees are exposed to hazards (such as welding or spray painting). Our health checks are in place to monitor occupational risks.
“This year we have launched the Speedy 5 ways to Better Health Programme, which provides lots of information to help employees make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing.
“We also run a zero tolerance drug and alcohol scheme, where 10% of employees are randomly tested each year.”
Q Are you a member of any associations and do you hold any accreditations? How do external organisations assist your company?
“At Speedy, we’re committed to quality, health, safety, the environment and sustainability in every aspect of our business.
“We have a raft of accreditations, including:
- ISO 9001:2008
- ISO 14001:2004
- OHSAS 18001:2007
“Speedy has taken a pioneering stance on health and safety in the hire industry, working hard to drive standards of best practice across our business and industry. We are the only UK hire company to be accredited to ISO:50001 – Energy Management systems. This demonstrates our commitment to reducing energy consumption.”
Q Speedy Expo 2017 will take place at Exhibition Centre Liverpool in November. Can you tell us more about the event?
“Speedy Expo is a 2 day event being held from 01st to 02nd November 2017, at Exhibition Centre, Liverpool, United Kingdom. This event showcases products including tools and equipment, lifting and materials handling equipment, temporary lighting equipment, temporary power generation and much more.
“In the evening, Speedy celebrates supplier innovation with a supplier/customer dinner, culminating in the Speedy Supplier Awards. Accolades include the Health and Safety Award, Environmental Award, Specialist Award, and Partnered Services Award.
“In its 9th successful year, Speedy Expo is the UKs largest private hire show.”
Q What is Speedy’s mission?
“Speedy’s mission is to provide safe, reliable hire equipment and services to enable successful delivery of customer projects.
“Our strategy for growth focuses on three fundamental themes:
- Providing first class customer service so that everything we do is focused on the customer.
- Innovating and doing things differently, and better than our competitors.
- Cultivating strong client relationships.
“Underpinning these is a commitment to keeping our people and customers safe, and creating an empowered culture.
“Our values are:
Safety – the first priority in everything we do.
As One – working together to collectively achieve our goals.
Innovation – continuously improving.
Drive – delivering first class customer service.
Q Why should prospective customers reading this article choose Speedy Services? What sets you aside from your competitors?
“Speedy is the largest and safest hire company in the UK, based on annual report accident injury frequency rates. We don’t just offer tools – we offer a safe way to use those tools with industry leading support, training and literature to make sure the customer, regardless of how big or how small, gets that job done, as safely and with the least amount of risk to their health as possible.
“Combining this with our industry leading Green Option products and our value added services – I would ask potential customers: Why would you want to work with the second safest or the second most sustainable hire company?
