RAMS (Risk Assessment and Method Statement) Boards are mobile, modular, multi-purpose health and safety stations that deliver clear and accessible information along with consumable, personal protective equipment to construction teams on site.
orlistat 60 mg without prescription Q. Tell us about your background and experience that led to the development of RAMS Boards?
Having worked as an engineer for over ten years, part of my role has been to seek new ways to efficiently and effectively deliver health and safety (H&S) messages.
Over the past decade and with the many sites I’ve set up, one of my key responsibilities has been to create notice boards that display statutory information. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking of the best way to not only attract but encourage the workforce to think constantly about H&S; via a more distinguishable focal point per se.
Through experience, I’ve recognised that good H&S behaviour and performance go hand in hand with quality products. With my employers, this has been achieved by introducing new procedures and additional training. On site for example, we’ve improved performance by implementing regular toolbox talks and near-miss cards.
Previously, I’ve been forced to spend time and resources either creating new or refurbishing old H&S material, if it has been in a reusable condition.
In my experience, standard notice boards made by carpenters on site unfortunately haven’t helped deliver a distinguished health and safety message – they’ve been bland and got lost in the dynamics of a construction site.
Through this experience, I knew I needed to develop a notice board that would clearly state, “We are serious about H&S”.
After a particularly bad notice board was made by a carpenter on one of my sites, I started to look at the cost of producing a standard type of board seen every day, bearing in mind materials, labour, time and ongoing maintenance. The cost was quite a substantial amount per unit and to top it off, these boards were often thrown into the skip after a project was complete!
So I thought, “I can do better”. I prepared a concept, established a design and set up a team of fantastic people to support my project.
http://allweatherfencing.com/an$.php Q. Please provide an overview of RAMS Boards.
RAMS Boards can carry:
- H&S, Risk Assessment and Method Statement documents
- First Aid or AED point
- Fire point
- Consumable PPE distribution point: Ear Plug Dispenser
- LEAN Manufacturing, 5S Board (Visual Management)
- Lockout, Tagout station
- Lens Cleaning Station
- Eye Wash Station
- Responsibility Mirror
- Daily Activity Whiteboard
The concept was to create a product to change the image of H&S information delivery.
Our aim was to create an information board that would be recognised by its shape and colour, to instinctively remind anybody on site of H&S instructions and responsibilities.
It has taken nearly two years but we have now created a standardised, modular, mobile and robust H&S message board.
RAMS Boards consists of three structural elements: the main board and two supports which can be anchored or filled with water for ballast. When assembled and fully loaded with water, the board can withstand wind speeds up to 70 km/h (43.5 mph). The board itself can also be used as a wall-mounted unit.
The display of statutory information is enabled with RAMS Boards. A combination of transparent A4 size document protective pockets and a magnetic white board allow delivery of relevant information as well as day to day notes in every environment. The board can act as a briefing point with: relevant Risk Assessment and Method Statements; a First Aid point; a Fire point; and Consumable PPE distribution points.
RAMS Boards two Core Values are:
Innovation – creative solutions to overcome day to day problems
Environment & Sustainability – products that are reusable and recyclable
To maintain our Core Values, we have established:
- An object that will attract operatives’ attention and become a reflex action with time
- A unique shape which will be accepted across the Construction Industry and beyond
- Clear segregation of information on the board
- The protection of messages and documents placed on the board
- Flexibility to the end user, as different projects have different needs
- The possibility of using RAMS boards as a multipurpose H&S station with all aspects required by law
- An environmentally friendly product – materials used during manufacturing process can easily be recycled
- Ease of transportation on site and between sites
- Low maintenance and extended durability
Q Why are RAMS Boards superior to comparable products on the market?
We feel we have brought a world-class product to the market that delivers clear, up-to-date information and consumable personal protective equipment to a variety of construction teams.
The boards weigh less than 50kg each so are potentially lighter than traditional plywood boards of the same size. This reduces the manual handling implications of transportation. Assembly is very easy and doesn’t require any mechanical aids, so HAVS risk are reduced. Being manufactured from recycled plastic and then being recyclable at the end of life contributes to sustainability as well as the use of timber being reduced.
Due to the changes in Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations for 2015, and with the increased liability of ‘the client’, major construction, manufacturing and educational organisations in the UK have started to recognise the benefits of having a RAMS Board within their facilities.
We’ve had interest from other European countries who see the UK as a leader in innovation in H&S products. We now have a presence in Ireland, Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Denmark and Norway.
We can proudly state that we export to Asia. Recently, we have delivered our RAMS Boards to Singapore – one of our clients, HSL Constructor, were so impressed with our product, they commented, and I quote, “The boards will be utilized and shared across all project sites”.
Q In closing, is there anything you would say to readers of this Q&A?
We hope that our vision: “To see safer sites across the industry by changing perception, using standardised and uniform objects,” is a model which will be adopted by others in the H&S industry.
We invite everyone who needs to present a clear H&S message to visit us at Safety & Health Expo 2017 where we will proudly showcase our RAMS Boards.
This type of event, based on our experience, is an effective way to showcase our fantastic product to potential users – direct communication, with ourselves and via RAMS boards, is a key to success.
