Established in 2004 but with origins dating back to the 19th Century, Otto Simon applies a unique blend of experience and innovation to our projects. Our services include due diligence, technology integration, front end engineering design, project management, turnkey project delivery and O&M (operations and maintenance) asset management.
Our legacy companies, Dr C Otto and Comp and Simon Carves, were both founded in the 1870s with the aim of transforming the coke-making and coal processing industries. Otto Simon draws upon the wealth of hard earned experience and knowledge from both of these legacy companies, and has rapidly established a distinguished track record of success and proven performance in the process, industrial and energy sectors. We’ve earned particular recognition for being one of industries leading authorities in the assessment and application of thermal processes, associated gas clean-up and liquid treatment.
In 2004, Otto Simon Carves’ legacy of know-how and experience was transferred into Otto Simon Ltd. Now a privately-owned company, Otto Simon continues to develop its distinguished track record of proven success in the coke/steel, industrial and process sectors.

CHRIS BRIDGLAND, MANAGING DIRECTOR
I hold a strategic leadership role within Otto Simon – I am responsible for ensuring that we provide integrated mechanisms that effectively, and efficiently, deliver projects and services safely to our customers.
I have a background in Mechanical Engineering and Project Management, and have worked on many EPC and EPCm construction projects across the UK, Europe and Asia. All these projects involved process engineering and the co-ordination and interfacing of engineering activities, across various engineering centres.
Enhancing operational improvement with the development and fusion of our people, processes, and technology, ensures the best delivery of services to our clients.
Like all Otto Simon employees, I’ve undertaken externally provided safety training including CCNSG Passport to Safety. I hold training in CDM Regulations 2015, Risk Management, IOSH Directing Safely, IOSH Managing Safely, and Behavioural Safety.
Otto Simon is dedicated to embedding safety into our culture, and strives to work safely at all times.
Our RoSPA Silver Award success signifies our commitment to ensuring the continued health and safety of all our employees.
Along with our RoSPA Silver Award and certification to OHSAS 18001, in the past twelve months, we have executed a number of challenging projects in difficult working environments, including a ‘hot idle’ of the Appleby Coke Ovens, and achieving 1 year Zero Harm on a Benzol Project.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
Health and Safety plays an important role in our core values and Otto Simon is proud to be a RoSPA Member. Our continual improvement plan for HSEQ ensures that all projects are delivered to the highest HSEQ standard.
We believe that all employees have a responsibility towards cultivating a safe working environment. We look to our Directors and Senior Management team to take an active role in leading the development and implementation of our Safety Plan and Safety Improvement Programme.
Otto Simon’s Senior Managers regularly undertake site safety audits and talk to teams on site, cascading safety information directly to everyone within the company, including sub-contractors.
Regular site tours involve the Work Teams, who discuss the work they’re currently undertaking and who listen to ideas or issues that the teams may have. This ensures a full understanding of the work being done.
Frequently, ideas for toolbox talks or safety briefings come out of general safety talks with people on the job, allowing us to address specific safety concerns with our workforce.
Measurable benefits are visible across Otto Simon’s recent projects, including the successful construction of a Benzol processing plant, and the delivery of a recovery and repair project for British Steel’s Appleby Coke Ovens.
The Benzol stripper and scrubbing plant was recently constructed with no time lost accidents over the 500-day project delivery programme. The project was constructed and integrated with the existing plant without interrupting ongoing operation.
The 6 month Appleby recovery and repair project involved a number of high hazard activities, including extensive work at height operations, working in proximity to operating machinery, and exposure to very high temperatures. With the exception of a minor first aid treatment, the job was carried out accident free.
The main benefit we’ve seen, however, is that our workforce feels confident in approaching supervisors and management to discuss issues or suggest ideas that might improve safety procedures and performance.
As part of the initiatives in place for 18001, a comprehensive safety improvement program has been implemented.
OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING
Otto Simon ensures that our workforce is involved in all aspects of Occupational Health and Safety, including the drawing up of risk assessments and method statements before a job is started. Site management teams use their experience, gained from up to 30 years working in challenging environments, to make sure that the job is designed and executed safely and efficiently.
Toolbox talks are carried out with the teams each week, to reinforce messages or highlight incidents that may be relevant to their work. Toolbox talks are also used to present new initiatives. For example, the teams were briefed on our plans for OHSAS 18001.
Otto Simon ensures that all of our employees have health screening targeted at their specific role. This is reviewed annually to ensure our controls are effective.
REVIEWING OH&S PERFORMANCE
Otto Simon assesses its OH&S performance in a number of ways, to evaluate progress toward the goal of zero incidents and to establish plans for continuous improvement.
The main means of reviewing occupational health and safety performance is through the Monthly Safety Meeting. The Safety Plan is reviewed at this meeting and any updates to the plan are made to ensure compliance.
A combination of the Monthly Safety Meeting and the Senior Management Meeting highlights incidents to the appropriate management level. Managers are held accountable for the occupational health and safety performance of their area of accountability.
Otto Simon maintains a central database for collecting data about all incidents. This allows continual monitoring and analysis, which in turn can identify trends or issues that need to be addressed.
We conduct regular audits and assessments at each location to measure the level of compliance with the Safety and Health Management System and standards. These audits identify gaps or systemic issues, and assist sites in addressing them. Audits and assessments identify successes and best practices that can be shared with other locations, and are a tool for continuous improvement.
Our corporate Combined Safety, Environment and Quality Policy, management system, standards, guidelines, and processes, are regularly reviewed and updated to ensure they continue to reflect sound practices and meet the company’s high standards.
The annual Safety Plan monitors both leading and lagging indicators so that timely and appropriate actions are made.
Like everyone, Otto Simon takes care to preserve the environments in which we operate. Our Combined HSEQ policy ensures that we prevent pollution, provide suitable controls for risks to health, safety and the environment arising from all of our operations, and comply with all relevant environmental, health and safety regulations.
What makes us unique is our desire to develop methods of life-cycle engineering. Otto Simon is currently working to establish links between technology providers that will encourage a circular economy within the waste-to-energy industry, by generating ‘waste-to-feed’ facilities; where waste product from one process becomes a feed product for another.
Otto Simon is certified to ISO 9001 and this year, became certificated to OHSAS 18001.
All of our engineering services are managed by third party approved quality management systems.
Otto Simon is dedicated to maintaining the highest professional standard of core skills and knowledge through the investment in, and continued development of, high calibre personnel and training.
We work towards continually providing opportunities for career development within our organisation; encouraging staff to be multi-skilled and to develop expertise in areas which interest them.
Striving to provide an enjoyable and stimulating working environment that encourages openness and collective ownership; we’re always on the look-out for like-minded individuals to enhance our company.
Otto Simon recently delivered several large-scale projects from commencement to commissioning with no lost time injuries.
Tasked with carrying out extensive structural and refractory repairs to Battery 3 of British Steel’s Appleby Coke Ovens at the Scunthorpe integrated Steelworks site, Otto Simon is proud of our achievement to deliver the project safely, and on time, despite the challenging working conditions.
The project took more than 250,000 man-hours to complete and was achieved whilst working between 2 live batteries with minimal disruption to normal operations; which enabled continued production of coke for British Steel’s blast furnaces.
The work was carried out while the three remaining coke oven batteries were still being operated, and while taking into account the movement of large oven machinery on all faces of the oven battery. The working environment therefore involved a number of hazards, including: working at height; working in close proximity to hot (900°C +) ovens; moving oven machinery; presence of flammable gases; hot surfaces; vibrating tools; manual handling; and lifting operations.
Otto Simon executed the work in a well-planned and carefully managed manner. Access controls were put in place, not only for company personnel carrying out the work, but for the client’s employees and sub-contractors who needed access to the work area. Otto Simon also introduced additional control measures to manage all of the hazards identified in our risk assessment process, including the introduction health screening for all employees.
The additional measures implemented for this project are now being rolled out across the rest of British Steel’s operations.
The controls put in during project execution were audited by both the client’s Health & Safety Director, who praised the systems in place, the project team leaders, and an LRQA auditor. The LRQA auditor, who also reviewed the systems and people working on site, ultimately recognised Otto Simon’s safety standards with certification to the OHSAS 18001 standard.
Ensuring that work is carried out in a safe and controlled manner has opened doors to further contracts.
Otto Simon is very proud of the safe delivery of this project, and we are applying our gained experience and lessons learned into our future project delivery plans.
Otto Simon believes that our values are reflected in the calibre and character of the personnel we employ and the uniquely rewarding environment in which we work.
