Cardiac Science – At the Heart of Saving Lives®
HSE International hears how Cardiac Science extends lives by providing the public and healthcare professionals with life-saving defibrillators.
Cardiac Science UK is a wholly owned subsidiary of Cardiac Science Corporation, head quartered in Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA. Within the UK, Stockport based offices provide commercial, technical and distribution facilities.
Cardiac Science has been designing and manufacturing Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) for ‘out of hospital’ emergency response in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) for over 26 years, and we’ve been responsible for installing over 500,000 Powerheart® branded AEDs globally within 100 countries.
Our singular purpose and passion is to save lives by providing:
- Those unfortunate to suffer SCA with the best possible therapy ahead of the Emergency Services arriving at the scene.
- Access to the best equipment for potential rescuers.
In the UK, 60,000 people die ‘out of hospital’ each year from sudden cardiac arrest. Across Europe, this figure is around 700,000. Life expectancy reduces between 7% and 10% for each minute that passes following SCA, so responding quickly in an emergency is vital to increase the chance of achieving a positive outcome for the patient.
The current average response time following a 999 call where a SCA is suspected is 12 minutes. If CPR is delivered in isolation to the SCA victim, the survival rate is around 1 in 50. When effective CPR is combined with therapy from an Automated External Defibrillator, the survival rate increases significantly – to around 75%. The mathematics is simple and clearly support the case for AEDs being widely available!
Companies, organisations and communities throughout the UK can seek advice and then order suitable equipment from our Stockport office and warehouse, or via one of our Strategic Partners – where they may currently source other Emergency or First Aid equipment.
Sudden cardiac arrest can affect a person of any age, sex or ethnicity. 50% of victims have no pre-diagnosed heart condition, so it’s vitally important that a Powerheart® G5 is capable of responding when called upon.
The Powerheart® G5 range of AEDs has been designed to provide advanced therapy for patients. With operational functionality that reflects a rescuer’s knowledge, skill set and confidence levels, both voice and text prompts guide users throughout a rescue. Each Powerheart® G5 AED conducts a rigorous self-checking regime daily, weekly, and monthly (113 individual self-tests in all), to ensure that all of its vital components will work in the event of SCA.
With the Powerheart® G5, operation is intuitive. There is no ‘on/off’ button to press – each device is activated by simply opening the lid. No graphics or images to follow; each step is provided by simple, clear voice and text prompts allowing the rescuer to focus on the patient and not the process.
Any assistance required is provided by our UK based Technical Team which is supported out of hours by our USA based colleagues (at standard UK call charges).
Powerheart® G5 AEDs are available in both fully or semi-automatic operational modes to suit an individual’s preferences. The electrodes (or pads as they are often called) can be placed in either position, which is one less thing for a rescuer to think about.
Following analysis of the patient’s heart rhythm, if therapy is required, the Powerheart® G5 will escalate the energy to a level that is most likely to achieve successful defibrillation after a single shock. In the case of fully automatic devices, this will be delivered at the optimum time for the patient’s needs without human intervention.
Effective CPR cycles (each being 30 chest compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths) are essential. Most people are aware of and some have been trained in delivering CPR through first aid training at work. Thankfully, many only have to familiarise themselves with these methods when they retrain after 3 years, but if the time comes (in the event of real life SCA), how will they react and perform?
The Powerheart® G5 range has an option to include ‘iCPR adult electrodes’ which provide real time CPR feedback, in accordance with the ERC 2015 guidelines. Once the device is placed on the patient’s chest, voice and text prompts again guide the rescuer to be more effective in CPR (e.g. ‘press faster’, ‘press slower’, ‘press softer’, ‘press harder’ and ‘fully release’). All of these prompts can make a real difference in achieving the ultimate goal of saving a life.
Customers can also specify a second language for any Powerheart® G5 AED, which can be accessed at any point during a rescue; thus changing the voice and text prompts to the specified alternative language.
see GUARANTEE & BENEFITS
Cardiac Science backs each Powerheart® G5 AED with an 8 year Manufacturer’s Warranty. The 420 Adult Shock Capacity Intellisense Battery has a 4 year unconditional Manufacturer’s Guarantee. Each set of electrodes has a 2 year Manufacturer’s Warranty.
These guarantees are of course good news, but what commercial options are available to make a multi-site requirement affordable?
- Buy their devices using a capital budget.
- Lease their equipment for periods of between 2 & 5 years for under £1 per day, allowing capital budgets to be used elsewhere (lease costs being an accounting operating cost).
- Hire on a weekly basis for short term needs.
- Create a mix of all 3 to suit their specific needs.
As we’ve already discussed, each Powerheart® G5 AED self-tests to ensure that it is ‘rescue ready’ at all times. However, companies and organisations may still want the assurance that their equipment is formally checked and information is recorded. Cardiac Science can now provide added assurance to suit individual customer needs by checking services using IOT based technology (from each device) or via physical checks.
Cardiac Science provides storage equipment for customers to both protect and help provide rapid access to their device(s) in an emergency. This includes internal and external storage, along with wall signage kits to increase awareness of the Powerheart® G5’s presence.
In addition, Cardiac Science works extensively with each of the UK’s Ambulance Services to increase their database of accessible AEDs following 999 calls. Our equipment is logged with local Ambulance Services so they are aware of the nearest AED in the case of an emergency. This helps callers access the nearest AED quickly, thus saving valuable time when it really counts!

The Safety & Health Expo provides us with the opportunity to meet and talk with decision makers ‘face to face’.
Many people are now aware of AEDs but a large proportion are unaware of how they perform in an emergency. The Safety & Health Expo allows us to listen to user needs and challenges. We can then create proposals that specifically reflects these after the event.
Providing easy electronic access to information to help customers learn at a time that suits them is essential.
It is vital that we show absolute respect for our colleagues, clients and others with all our activities undertaken in the pursuit of developing business relations.
We work with organisations that reflect Cardiac Science’s corporate purpose and passion.
The UK Ambulance Trusts continue to provide tremendous support for us and we are very grateful for this. Having professional Paramedics that endorse and support our equipment adds weight to our position.
Our Strategic Partners, including St John Ambulance, Kays Medical, Resuscitation Consultancy Medical Services, Henry Schien, The Community Heartbeat Trust and The First Aid Industry Body, add value to the end user proposition, where the Powerheart® G5 range of AEDs frequently forms a part of their Emergency First Aid needs.
To provide a range of commercial options, we work with various specialists in the field. Shire Leasing plc provide lease options for customers where this approach is best fitted. Supply UK provide weekly hire options via their nationwide depot network, allowing companies and organisations to deploy the Powerheart® G5 AED when a short term need has been identified. This option removes the need for capital expenditure.
Many people now research their AED needs using the internet at their desks. Having a presence with key online resellers, such as the Defibshop and Defibstore, make this possible, increasing both the knowledge and presence of the Powerheart® G5 range.
Charities also provide a great service, particularly to local communities who typically (although not exclusively) work through their Town or Parish Councils. This ensures that they get the best advice, equipment and ongoing support in reflection of their needs.
The Community Heartbeat Trust (CHT) has pioneered many of the AED initiatives that are now seen around the country. Who would have thought of using our old red BT call boxes to provide rapid access to an AED? CHT did and has agreed a support programme with BT nationally to add life (no pun intended!) back to these iconic structures.
From 31 December 2016, the Health & Safety Executive has stipulated that all First Aid at Work training courses should include the use of an AED within the syllabus. Cardiac Science work with the FAIB (First Aid Industry Body) and their training company member representatives to ensure that they have access to the G5 training devices. Powerheart® G5 AEDs are used as a part of a ‘hands on’ course delivery, and whilst not being capable of delivering therapy, replicate how a live device will function in a rescue. This gives training delegates the knowledge and confidence to act in a timely manner in the case of a real life SCA.
Providing access to AEDs, given that there is currently no Government legislation making this a legal requirement, provides a very powerful and positive message to those that work for a company or live within a community. It is really important that decision makers choose equipment from a manufacturer that can be trusted and relied upon in the event of an emergency.
Decisions based on the initial unit cost alone are not always the best or most appropriate; understanding specific needs and conducting background research is essential. We are, after all, talking about a piece of life-saving equipment that will provide a sudden cardiac arrest victim with defibrillation therapy, increasing their chance of survival before the Emergency Services arrive. Yes, the available budget is going to form a part of the process, but please look beyond this point to the longer term.
Things to consider:
- Are you confident that a piece of equipment you hope will never be used is going to work if and when and it is called upon?
- Should you encounter any problems, is the Warranty provided by a manufacturer or distributor?
- Do you have access to future advice, consumables and technical support?
Decisions about deploying Automated External Defibrillators are made infrequently, so make sure that they are made to include all of the key areas of consideration. No matter what your business sector is, your AED devices and services need to be tailored to your unique needs. The placement of AEDs in the workplace and out in public can save lives.
Cardiac Science design, manufacture and market ‘out of hospital’ AEDs. It’s what we know and what we’re passionate about! Feedback from our customers and supply partners help us to provide and further develop the best possible AED technology and support. We’ve been doing this for 26 years across the world and will continue to strive at being the best overall provider in the future.
